Father Rouquette, having served at the Saint Louis Cathedral in New Orleans, embarked on a mission to minister to the indigenous peoples of the region. His legacy is marked by the construction of a series of small chapels (long gone) on the North Shore of New Orleans, serving as beacons of spiritual guidance.
Adrien Rouquette was the son of Louise Cousin and Dominique Rouquette. Louise was the daughter of Jean Francois Cousin and his first wife, Catherine Peuche Carriere.
Jean Francois Cousin, Adrien’s grandfather, was a very wealthy man who made his fortune from his large landholdings and selling bricks he produced.
Jean Francois Cousin was originally married to Catherine Peuche Carriere, the widow of Jacques Carriere. Catherine had two sons with Jacques, Francois Carriere and Terrance Carriere.
After Jacques died, Catherine married Jean Francois Cousin, and they had more children together, including Louise Cousin.
Francois Carriere, one of Adrien’s step-uncles through Catherine’s first marriage, married Mary Polly Cryer. Francois Carriere’s grandparents on his father’s side were Joseph Carriere and Marguerite Trepagnier.
Marguerite Trepagnier had a sister named Barb Ursula Trepagnier she marries Guillaume Vincent Dubuisson.
This connection made Guillaume related by marriage to Francois Carriere, and thus indirectly connected to Adrien Rouquette through the extended family network.
Adrien Rouquette grew up influenced by the landscapes of Bonfouca and the culture of the Choctaw Indians. After his father, Dominique, died, Adrien spent time with the Order of Mount Carmel, which deepened his spirituality. He returned to New Orleans and became known as a poet and priest.
After leaving Saint Louis Cathedral he would move to the north shore and build a series of five small chapels that he used to minister to the Choctaw Indians.
